Audio

Saturday, July 8th, 2006It’s been a while since I’ve posted - I’ve been busy entertaining Adam and catching up at work. It’s actually been a pretty fun week (Suzuki driving aside) and I’ve been up to all sorts of things.
Most likely the two most exciting events from my week both relate to audio: I got Electroplankton for my DS, and a surround receiver for my entertainment center. Not much to say about the receiver except that I like it and it falls into that beautiful category of things in my life that are big, black, and sexy. Now I just need to get some better speakers and I’ll be set.
Electroplankton is far from a “typical game” and is more of a user friendly sound toy and I have been having a lot of fun reviewing it and creating all sorts of little soundscapes with it. Think a touch sensitive synthesizer with a marine theme. I’ll be posting a more through review to Gearlive at some point in the near future so keep an eye out for it.
This morning I had to wake up rather early to take Adam to the bus stop in Yakima and pick up my precious GLI. After driving the Suzuki for an entire week I had almost gotten used to it and it was so nice to get back into my car. Zuki really did help remind me why I love the GLI so much - driving home on I-90 was a true pleasure, gliding over the pavement smoothly listening to my iPod and sportily flirting with motorcycles.
Mind Camp ROCKS!
Sunday, April 30th, 2006All I have to say is Mind Camp 2.0 ROCKS! I’m here with more than 200 geeks, I have not slept in over 24 hours, and I’ve had some of the most cool and amazing conversations about every topic under the sun from real estate, to DSL, to video blogging (just wait - more on this in a moment), and social networking.
One second of music
Thursday, January 5th, 2006Leap Sounds is a unique little project over at createdigitalmusic. It’s a collection of 1 second tracks spliced together honoring the second of time added atomic clocks everywhere on the first of this year to account for the slowing of the earths rotation. Very plinky happy music if you ask me!
Also: THE EARTH IS SLOWING?! I know 26 seconds in 30 years is not too much, but it’s still an alarming thought. What happens if eventually the earth stops rotating? Luckily I won’t be around in any sort of biological way to endure whatever effects may come of it by then.
DirIndexFaker
Wednesday, December 14th, 2005Check out DirIndexFaker - it’s a slick little anti-RIAA honeypot of sorts that P2Pnet just posted. The MPAA and RIAA have spider bots that crawl around the internet looking for copyrighted material. They then use the logs from those bots to sue people, many of whom have turned out to be innocent.
DirIndexFaker creates a /media directory on your website with fake files that look like they would be in violation of copyright. The RIAA/MPAA then downloads those files and use them as evidence against the owners of the site, however discovers they have downloaded a file of random 0’s and 1’s.
This slows down the spiders and makes them put more efforts into checking their files. I encourage all website owners to put this script somewhere on their server. It sends a message to big media and complicates their attempts to turn technology against people and restrict what they can do with their media and computers.
iTunes Music Signature
Monday, December 12th, 2005Jason Freeman has put together a nifty tool called the iTunes Signature Maker. It’s kind of hard to explain but does a great job bringing together catchy moments of your favorite songs into a sort of personal musical style. It uses play-count and other information from iTunes to determine which tracks are your favorite before processing them. Neat stuff - I’m going to post my signature as soon as I get off my duff and download something capable of turning the 14MB WAV file it generated into something a bit more manageable.
Update: Here is my music signature - happily converted to MP3 format thanks to Richard’s suggestion. It’s about 80 seconds long and contains my 100 top rated tracks.
Ahhnold’s family values
Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005A quick video remix of our favorite California Governor: Arnold vs. DJ Disco. Talk about solid family values and strong moral leadership.
