The vacation begins

Wednesday, December 21st, 2005

My vacation is off to a roaring start. After closing that deal yesterday I got to take our new consultant to lunch today. The moment he walked into the resturant I was pleasantly surprised to discover why his name sounded familiar: we had knowen each others from years back and have met at various events - we have a number of mutual friends.

After lunch I took one of my Christmas presents - a Best Buy gift certificate - and put in a little bit of money for myself to get a Christmas present. I got a Canon SD400 so that I would have both an easily pocketed camera as well as something to act as a backup in case my 10D ever decides to go tits up again.

I’m pretty impressed with the SD400 at the moment. It’s obviously nothing compared to the 10D but still packs a pretty decent little punch. One surprising little feature is “selective color”. Using that feature lets you select a color in the scene to keep and drop everything else out. As you can see from the photo above it can lead to some striking photos. It’s easy to do after the fact in Photoshop but still a nice little quirk.

Jake and Tres joined me for dinner tonight, then Brien joined us after to watch War Games. God - I had not seen it in ages and had forgotten how cool of a movie it was.

Latte art: caffeine in action

Saturday, December 17th, 2005

Check out the latte art page that geekpress just turned me on to - lots of cool things baristas have managed to do with the foam on your cuppa jo! Makes me wish I had an espresso machine just so I could experiment with the art du coffee!

Sushi aftermath

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005

Some sake and sushi with Ken made this evening a success. We are about to go watch some space western and have fun with CSS. Fun times were had by all and now further discussions are ensuing.

Catching up

Sunday, December 11th, 2005

The last couple of days have actually been pretty damn good! On Friday we had a big goal setting and team building event at work. Normally those kinds of things leave me wishing I could knaw off my right arm rather than attend, but this was surprisingly fun, if not slightly bland.

We all went out to lunch at the 13 coins for our goal setting, then over to Jillian’s for some pool for the rest of the afternoon. While pool is not really a game I get into it was kind of nice to take the afternoon and relax, experimenting with the Qtek 9100’s camera.

Saturday came as a blessed relief after a long week. I spent the morning cleaning and getting old computers ready for my mom’s new law practice, then in the evening Scott, Mark, Erin, Brien, and myself all went out to see Narnia and get some sushi at Wasabi Bistro.

Narnia was actually quite well done. I really enjoyed watching it and it had a few genuinely exciting moments. I had been a bit worried that the Christian backers might have made the religious side of the story a bit heavy handed but they balenced it well. I’m really hoping it does well in the box office numbers so that they end up making the rest of the series - it’s one I would want to hold marathons for at Casa Del Sparky.

Today I’m looking forward to spending much of the day relaxing. I’m at Red Line right now drinking some coffee and (obviously) catching up on blogging. This afternoon I have some dev stuff I want to play with, and a couch that needs some Sparky+Skype cuddle time!

Post Thanksgiving bliss

Thursday, November 24th, 2005

Full of turkey and desserts I lay at home, a puppy snuggled up under the covers. I am in an hypnotic trance staring at TNG content dancing across the screen as my stomach slowly processes its protein laden sugar glut. Consciousness is soon to fail me for a long nights rest.

Could life be better? It will be on Saturday when I get my new toy!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thursday, November 24th, 2005

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Today is a day that the United States traditionally gives thanks for everything that has been a blessing in their life. I would like to list the following things that I am personally thankful for.

What are you thankful for? What do you hope for in the coming year? I’m off to the Henry household in a bit here to enjoy some fine wine, good turkey, and great friends!
