Saturday, March 4th, 2006Last night was fun as usual! I escaped work a bit early (I had an off-site meeting that got over at a little after 4:00 and I slipped out after) and went home to chill with Skype. After spending some time decompressing my friend Haven came to pick me up for dinner.
We ended up at the Twilight Exit after and Indian dinner. The Twilight Exit was certainly a new experience for me. Part dive bar, part geek hangout (with wifi and the works), part pool hall, and a tinsy dash of the smell of something horrible and frightening. The bar had a faint oder of cat piss, and although the smoking ban prevented people from smoking inside it still managed to have a murky atmosphere rich with impurities.
As most people could tell from even a cursory inspection of my life I’m not much for bars so I was not in a mood to stay that long. We left after about two hours and after a bit I made it home to relax.
The test I referred to in this posts title is a simple one: I made it through the entire night without smoking! I was a little worried about going out drinking, and it was indeed a bit of a challenge, but I figure that if I can make it through a couple of hours out at a bar five days into quitting cold turkey I can make it through anything.
As far as not smoking is going I’m completely happy with the results. I’m completely over the sick part of the withdrawals, and aside from a few triggers it’s pretty damn easy to just not even think about smoking. My lungs have better capacity already, and I don’t get winded nearly as easily.
Breathing fatty free
Wednesday, March 1st, 2006So last night Jason came over and brought with him the Pizza of Yore (at least the leftovers from Sunday) so that we could dine and watch a Harry Potter movie. The evening was fun, and we even had some really interesting conversations about careers and technology.
The big news however is how well I’m doing at quitting smoking - and the impact that will have on my waistline. Normally when I quit smoking I get hungry and tired. Last night was no exception! After Jason left at about 11:00 I was feeling a little hungry and a lot tired. No big deal - I’ll just eat another piece of pizza (my 4th for the evening) and go to bed right?
Wrong! I made it to bed all right, but then woke up in the middle of the night coughing up all the glorious black tar that had been leasing my lungs. No biggie - I’m used to coughing up black nastiness when I quit smoking. Then the hunger struck - it’s 2am, I’m coughing a lung up, and I have the munchies worse than most stoners can dream.
So what do I do? I eat another piece of pizza. No big deal - it’s only my fifth one in a six hour period right? Well that would all be good and fine if I didn’t wake from my coma yet again at 4am, and then again at 7am to repeat the process: cough, pizza, sputter, TAR!
So yeah - I guess I’m getting healthier. I’m on day three of not smoking, my lungs are clearing up, and I’ve eaten nearly an entire pizza in the last 8 hours and I’m still starving. Here come healthy lungs, and a voluptuous waistline!
More of the psycho-sci-fi drama!
Sunday, February 19th, 2006Today continued the relentless Battlestar Galactica - Season 2.0 marathon. Several people including Scott and Jason came over and we drank, watched BSG, and generally had a very good time. Brien was down for part of it but he’s been pretty busy packing this weekend for his big work-trip in Ireland.
Midway through we broke for sushi and had a fine meal at Blue-C. Every time I go there I am so happy - such good sushi and fun times. I’m hoping that the rumors I have heard that they will be opening a second location in downtown Seattle.
I’m kinda a little nervous about Brien leaving for Ireland. I’m going to miss him - 5+ weeks is a long time for a business trip. Hopefully he will have a lot of fun. I’m hooking him up with a Flickr account and hope that he uses his new camera to take lots of cool photos in the wee land O’ the Irish.
Overwrought emotional gambling
Sunday, February 12th, 2006Friday was a disaster - luckily the actual weekend has been a bit better. On Friday my company had our annual holiday party. Unfortunately they had the bad taste to have a casino night. Loud noises, heavy drinking, casino gambling, and all our employees makes for a bad combination and a worse experience for an introverted little geek like me.
I had an anxiety attack from too many strangers and ended up leaving in a hurry. I was so nerve-wracked that I threw up in the parking lot of the Bellevue Club on my way out. I’m not sure but I think that throwing up in the parking lot of a fancy health club makes me special.
You know it’s funny. I love the company I work for - it’s why I’m there, but I really can’t stand the way they choose to reward their employees. It would make so much more sense to me to take the thousands of dollars that they spend on an event like that had give us all better benefits, or something like that. Forcing your employees to come to a moral event just makes for some uncomfortable times.
* * *
Thankfully yesterday and today have involved a lot of nothing. I spent most of the day yesterday slogging my way through season 2 of Star Trek Voyager, and going out to Kirkland with Brien to hang out with some of his friends. Today is going to be more friends with the continuation of our Battlestar Galactica marathon.
I also managed to get FTP working on my powerbook, and learned how to configure restricted FTP and sFTP users. I’m planning on getting an iMac or Mac Mini again at some point in the future so I can get back to work setting up my full time server.
Farewell Seattle office
Friday, January 27th, 2006My company is doing the big office moves this weekend and starting Monday I’ll be back in the commuting ranks given that our fancy new office is in Redmond.
I’m really not that happy about the drive, but I’m very much looking forward to being back amongst the technical people in our company so I can really experience the vibrancy of software development again.
Today was tiring, getting everything packed up and such. We had a quick pizza lunch, and got everything into boxes for the movers. After work I went out for a round of drinks (I’m sure my co-workers are still out actually) to Daniels where I took a couple of nice shots.
I’m really looking forward to not doing much this weekend. I picked up a book on Mac OS X programming and want to play around a little with that.
Oh yeah - and I have my taxes tomorrow. Hopefully it will be a fat refund rather than the normal ass raping from the government.
FlipChoad meet your little brother MiniChoad
Sunday, January 15th, 2006It’s been a relaxing and fun weekend. I’ve watched a lot of television, and continued my conquest of re-encoding all of my videos into h.264. I’ve put in a few more hours on touching up all the photo’s of Janet’s wedding and hope to have all the post production work within another couple of weeks.
On Saturday I decided that I needed a smaller phone and a second line of service so that I could always have an optimal device with a good trade off between form factor and functionality. I ended up settling on the Cingular 2125, which has Windows Mobile 5.0 just like my Qtek 9100, and makes email/sms decently easy (aside from it’s lack of a QWERTY keyboard). Even though both devices share most of the same specifications (processor, screen resolution, network support, RAM) the smartphone based 2125 seems much more responsive, and with it’s antenna sled it has far superior reception for both voice and data.
Today made for a Costco run with Brien. We both got lots of frozen foodstuffs, and went in on some ready to cook food for tonight. Now I’m sitting here in a food coma, blogging before I let sleep take me.
On that note…
Shiv Alley
Friday, January 13th, 2006Last night was fun - Brien, Skype, and myself all went down to Jake and Tres’ new place in Shiv Alley (Pioneer Square) for some arts, crafts, and pizza.
After a viewing of some of the best moments of Logans Run we made worry dolls out of threat and some cat5 cable. Talk about gayness!
I have to admit - I’m a little jealous about their new place. I don’t really like the location, but the loft is amazing. It’s roomy, and has great textures to photograph. Skype of course loved having all of the extra room to romp about in.
Another rotation, another year
Sunday, January 1st, 2006Happy 2006 everyone! I’m just home and getting ready for bed after a rousing night at Jason’s with Brien, Jake, Tres, Bryce, and myself including drinking, fondue, and the usual insanity.
I have a lot of personal goals that I’ve set myself for 2006. I’m looking forward to fulfilling them all and beyond. Best wishes that everyone else may fufil their goals as well.
Happy New Year!
Saturday, December 31st, 2005Happy new year to all you out there on the web! IT’s been a dry week for posting to my blogs, but I’ve been enjoying myself and my vacation - it’s a good thing! Christmas was nice, and I’ve spent the last week on my couch playing Dragon Quest VIII - it really is quite a fantastic game.
Brien and I are about to hop off to Jason’s for a NYE party. It should be fun - check my Flickr stream tomorrow for some pics! Next week will see a new design for Futurist Now, and my sisters wedding!
