Veo: I'm not sure I disagree with your third paragraph - I don't think it's something you can ignore. It turns homosexuality into a freak show teeming with drag queens and overly sexual deviants who will fuck at the drop of a hat. Particularly in less progressive areas (boy am I glad I live in Seattle) I could see a spectacle like a gay pride parade reinforcing bad stereotypes and giving homophobic assholes more ammunition about the "gay agenda".

I'll agree that raising awareness of equal rights may be a good idea, but we should really show off what the real gay culture is: the same thing as straight culture, only with more penis, and less vagina.

While I agree more or less with your whole post I think that you may be forgetting that we live in an egalitarian bubble, mostly insulated from the harsh realities of the 'moral majority' of America.

I think its great that you can look beyond all race/gender/orientation and see each individual's underlying qualities..and I'd like to think that I view people the same way. But the sad fact is that we're the leading edge of the cultural curve and 99% of the population isnt on board with that attitude, yet.

So I say let the out and proud'ers have their parade. Live and let live, right? You're not compelled to participate becuase you're gay...why does it matter to you? It's not hurting anyone and just maybe it will change a handful attitudes.
