Sorry about the RSS problems

Saturday, December 3rd, 2005

I just made a few adjustments to Wordpress and changed the way my permalinks work. I wanted them to be more structured and provide posting date and title information via the address bad. Sorry to all my RSS readers who just got spammed with 2 updates to all of my old posts during my tweaks.

MAMP is nifty stuff

Saturday, December 3rd, 2005

Even better! So I had been working with the default Apache install on my powerbook, and had installed MySQL, and PHPmyAdmin for my development environment. I had been somewhat at a loss for other tools (aside from trusty TextWrangler) until today when a reader turned me on to MAMP. It’s a simple install, and provides a great separate development environment for my PHP stuff while leaving “production” code for the default Apache install. It makes it even easier to play around with stuff, and comes with a ton of documentation and optimization extensions.

MAMP installs everything I had and more, while keeping everything (including the separate applications and the wwwroot) in it’s install folder making it easy to blow away the databases and development environment if you have to.

Getting back into development sure has been interesting so far. It’s been years since I’ve picked up something in earnest and I’m quite pleased with how quickly PHP is coming back to me.

DAMP?

Saturday, December 3rd, 2005

So here is a question: if Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP is called a LAMP solution what would the same thing be called if based on OS X? Would it be XAMP? What if you considered that it was built on Darwin - DAMP? How about using Mac for the first letter - MAMP? What would you call such a solution. Leave a comment if you have an opinion.

I’m liking DAMP myself - it has a nice ring to it for a development technology and an innuendo at the same time!

Update: It looks like as much as I like DAMP a few people have pointed out that MAMP is the accepted standard. There is even a 1 click installer for these technologies that helps people get into development quickly.

The weekend begins

Friday, December 2nd, 2005

The week is over and I’m ready to relax over the weekend. I got a number of good candidates out this week so I have a goof feeling of productivity. As much of a slump as I’ve been in productivity wise in the past month I think I’m back on the track for success.

I had planned on going to see the new Harry Potter movie again with my friend Scott tonight but his dad became ill and he had to cancel. I hope all goes well with his families health. I think I am going to use the suddenly free evening to relax and get started on some projects.

* * *

I’m now sitting on my couch as happy as a clam (what does that mean anyway). I have TNG season 2 (not my favorite season, but hey - it’s TNG) blaring on the TV, Skype at my side, a big half-eaten pizza in the kitchen, and a nearly finished website development project nearly done on my powerbook. Talk about geek heaven!

Yet again I have to comment with how impressed I am with Wordpress. I’m using it to do a quick redesign for my condo building. After selecting (then hacking to pieces) a great theme and setting up Wordpress I was able to get the whole thing online in a matter of hours.

In the days before easily customizable open source solutions like this would have taken days and been a complete pain. Now that Creative Commons, the GPL, and other online idea-sharing concepts have taken hold easy and quick technology use is within anyones grasp. Now that everyone can contribute their strengths everyone can benefit.

The Xbox 360 power supply and a GameCube

Friday, December 2nd, 2005

Infendo - GameCube versus Xbox 360 Power Supply: wow, the picture is worth 1000 words. Admittedly I would much rather have the Xbox 360 than the Gamecube in terms of graphics and playability, but still - this is ridiculous. Also on the topic is this great webcomic.
Seriously Microsoft - find a way to trim down your power requirements so you don’t need a power supply that doubles as a space heater.

Damn snow

Thursday, December 1st, 2005

It’s snowing. Sitting here at my office is like being trapped in a snow globe, watching the world slowly turn to absolute crap. Did I mention how much I hate snow? It’s cold, wet, and miserable. Nobody in Seattle knows how to drive in it and that makes me sad.

Luckily none of it has stuck yet. I’m just hoping that trend continues. I don’t relish the idea of trying to drive home with my summer performance tires in even a half inch of snow.
